What it’s Really like to live in Harnett County... from a Duncan Native

by Roberta Sorrell

I wasn’t born in Harnett County- I was born in Alabama- but moved here shortly after and this is the place that raised me. I grew up on a small farm in Duncan, and those early years shaped how I see land, community, and home. Harnett County isn’t just where I built my career; it’s where I learned the value of hard work, space, and neighbors who look out for one another. That perspective matters, especially in real estate. After nearly 10 years working in real estate, I’ve helped buyers and sellers all across Harnett County and surrounding areas. What I can tell you with certainty is that living here is very different from simply buying a house here. One of the biggest draws to Harnett County is freedom. Freedom to have land, freedom to have land without restrictive rules, and freedom to live more intentionally. Many properties offer larger lots, no HOA’s, fewer restrictions, and room to breathe. For many families, that alone is life changing. It can be very hard to find that in surrounding counties. Wake county, for example has a lot going for it, but growth there has come with a price-literally. Higher home prices, heavier traffic, and smaller lots are pushing buyers to look a little further out.

While Harnett County holds onto that rural feel- we’re still within a reasonable drive to Raleigh, Fayetteville, and Fort Bragg. Harnett County is more connected than people expect. That makes this area especially attractive to military families, commuters, and buyers who want affordability without giving up access to work, shopping, and healthcare. One of the biggest reasons many people are drawn to Harnett County is its strong connection to our military community. With such close proximity to Fort Bragg, many active-duty members, and military families choose Harnett County because it offers space, affordability, and a quieter lifestyle- without being too isolated. Many military families also appreciate the shorter commutes, more home for their money, and strong sense of community and patriotism within our county. The town of

Lillington is the county seat(capital) of Harnett County, located right along the Cape Fear River. If there is one place I’ve watched transform the most, its Lillington. The growth isn’t accidental-its intentional. Lillington is seeing many new developments, growing local small business, dining options and plans for future infrastructure improvements and commercial opportunities. What I love most is that Lillington is growing without losing its charm. You still get that small-town feel, but with progress. It is clearly a community on the rise. So growth is a real part of the story now. New construction continues to expand throughout the county and surrounding areas, and with it comes opportunity and questions. As someone who grew up here and now works in real estate full time, I often help clients understand how growth impacts property values, infrastructure, and lifestyle. Not every neighborhood is the same, and not every build fits every buyer. Localguidance and knowledge make a difference.

What truly sets Harnett County apart, though, is its sense of community. Its high school football games, roadside produce stands, and neighbors who still wave when you pass. It’s a place where people plant roots, raise families, and often stay longer than planned. Harnett County helped shape who I am. Growing up on that small farm in Duncan taught me to respect the land and the people who live on it. After nearly a decade in real estate, helping others find their place here is more than a job-its personal. If you’re considering making Harnett County home, it’s important to work with someone who understands not just the market, but the lifestyle. That understanding makes all the difference. I realize people don’t want chaos- most just want a place to build a life and Harnett County delivers that. As a local who grew up here and has spent years helping families buy and sell homes, I don’t just sell Harnett County- I live it. If you’re curious about whether this or any area is right
